An Equishark screen result for the ASX, listing companies with the dividend yield reported for each

Illustrative screen output. Figures are examples, not current data, and not a recommendation.

What the screen actually does

It sorts ASX-listed companies by their reported dividend yield and lists the ones at the top, with the yield shown against each. Nothing is selected for you and nothing is ranked by opinion — it is one published figure, in order.

  • Dividend yield
  • Dividend per share
  • P/E ratio
  • Earnings per share
  • Price to book (MRQ)
  • Profit margin
  • Market cap
  • Sector and industry
  • …and dozens more

Yield is rarely the only thing worth filtering on. Add earnings, debt or profit margin to the same screen and you narrow the list to companies that meet all of your conditions at once.

Three things worth knowing about a yield screen

None of these are obstacles. They are properties of the measure, and knowing them changes how you read a result.

1

Yield moves when the price moves

Dividend yield is the dividend divided by the share price, so it rises when the price falls even though the dividend has not changed. A company at the very top of a yield ranking has often had a large price fall, and the figure reflects that as much as it reflects the payout.

2

It is backward-looking

The yield is calculated from dividends already declared. A company under no obligation to repeat them can cut or suspend at any time, and a one-off special dividend inflates the figure for a year before dropping out of it.

3

The ASX pays more than most markets

Australia's index is weighted toward financials, materials and energy — sectors that distribute a larger share of earnings than the technology-heavy US market. A yield that looks high against a NASDAQ screen may be ordinary on the ASX.

Every company in a result opens onto its price history, historical financial statements and metrics, so you can check the figures the screen ranked it on rather than take them on trust. Dividend yield itself is charted over time, against the price.

Compare against other markets

The same yield screen runs on every market Equishark covers, so an ASX result can be read next to the equivalent list elsewhere. Company data is refreshed daily.

Common questions

Dividends declared over the trailing period, divided by the current share price, expressed as a percentage. Because the price is the denominator, the same dividend produces a higher yield after a price fall and a lower one after a rise.

Yes. The screen opens on a ready-made threshold so there is something to look at immediately, and you can change it, or copy the filter and add other measures to it. See editing filters for how.

Yes. You can run the screen and read company financials without paying. A few of the deeper sections use credits, and you are given some to start with — see pricing.

Company data is updated daily. Figures come from third-party providers and may be delayed, incomplete or restated — they are indicative and not suitable for trading purposes.

No. Equishark shows you factual information about listed securities and lets you filter and rank it. It does not provide financial product advice, and Turbosoft Networks does not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence. A high yield is a measurement, not a recommendation, and nothing here takes account of your objectives, financial situation or needs. Read the full Disclaimer.
